Associated Press joins global initiative to expand reporting on religion

The Associated Press is joining with the Religion News Service and the nonprofit publisher The Conversation to form a global initiative to expand news reporting on religion in the United States and around the world.

The collaboration is being funded by an 18-month, $4.9 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to the Religion News Service’s parent organization, the nonprofit Religion News Foundation. The grant represents one of the biggest investments in religion news coverage in decades.

A missed opportunity: Barack Obama omits Jesus Christ from Easter messages

Former president Barack Obama campaigned on his Christian faith—heavily name-dropping Jesus Christ—back in 2008 and 2012. But he didn’t mention the son of God at all on Easter Sunday in 2019. Why not?

In two separate tweets on Resurrection Day, the first African-American Commander-In-Chief mentioned Easter, but omitted any mention of the Messiah, the very reason believers celebrate.

Sri Lanka Easter attack: Women’s ministry leader Dianna Hobbs offers prayers and words of comfort 

Empowering Everyday Women Ministries founder, Dianna Hobbs, is offering prayers, as well as words of support, comfort and encouragement after extremist attacks killed more than 200 people and injured hundreds more in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday.

“We are praying for the victims’ families, loved ones, and the entire country of Sri Lanka after this horrific and devastating attack against Christians, and citizens,” said the nonprofit leader, 42, as the nation is reeling from the devastating news that eight bomb blasts rocked churches and luxury hotels in or near Sri Lanka’s capital.

African-American Christian conservative, Candace Owens, is hitting back against the hatred she has received for being vocal about her conservative political views.

The 29-year-old, who spoke before the House Judiciary Committee on hate crimes and white nationalism, said, “When I announced that I was a conservative, I’d never seen anything more racist, more disgusting, more vitriolic, and more hate that’s come my way my entire life.”

Prayers Up: Mozambique recovers from cyclone, fights threat of cholera

BOPIRA, Mozambique (AP) — A battered notebook lists the people still alive in this village after a devastating cyclone. But sip by sip, a deadly threat remains.

Nearly a month after Cyclone Idai made landfall and unleashed flooding that reached the tops of trees, more than 1,300 people in Bopira have been drinking from the local pond and whatever the muddy waters left behind, including the contents of flooded latrines. The conditions are ripe for deadly disease.
