Spread Christmas Cheer: Give the gift of kindness this season

Galatians 5:22 tells us that kindness is a fruit of the Spirit, so spread a little cheer through kindness to those around you this holiday season.

Here are 5 ways you can easily show the love of Christ this Christmas.

#1 Visit the sick. If someone you know is ill, pay them a visit! One of the greatest gifts you can give is your time. There is nothing quite as precious as setting aside moments to make someone feel special and minister to their needs as they battle illness.

#2 Donate to those less fortunate. Give money to a children’s charity or another organization dedicated to helping give the poor a rich Christmas. A small donation of clothing, toys, food or even volunteering, can have a huge impact on somebody’s holiday.

#3 Speak a good word. It doesn’t have to be much. Just saying that you like a person’s coat, hair, or smile can brighten their day. And of course, don’t forget to utter a jolly “Have a Merry Christmas!”

#4 Share a smile. If you feel cheerful (which I hope you do) show it! Smiling is a relatively simple thing, and is also contagious. When you put a smile on one person’s face, they’ll likely do the same for the next person.

#5 Give the gift of warmth. A warm smile is great, but a warm meal, blanket, hat and gloves given to a homeless person is even greater. James 2:16 NIV puts it this way: “If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” So put some kind action behind those kind words.

There are so many ways to be a blessing. Cook dinner for a family that can’t do it themselves, give out a hug or two, or anonymously sow a gift into someone's life. This year, whether you have a person mind you would like to surprise with a visit, or are planning a random act of kindness, show lots of love to everyone.

And remember, Christmas season, which is all about celebrating the birth of Christ, is not the only time to be kind. Treat every day as an opportunity to make someone smile!
