Faith-Based Film Buzz: ‘War Room’ Stuns Industry With Huge Opening, Gets A+ Rating

War Room Article By Marc Hanson:: EEW Magazine Entertainment News

Affirm/Tri-Star’s faith-based film, War Room, is shocking the industry with its strong box office start.

Its early Friday numbers appeared to have beat Straight Outta Compton, $3.8M to $3.7M according to Deadline.

Alex Kendrick’s film about a troubled, strained family that is restored by an elderly woman’s war room for prayer could possibly make $10M-$10.8M for the weekend.

This is 100% more than the industry was projecting for the Christian film opening in 1,135 theaters.

War Room is expected to come in second behind Compton for the weekend.

Kendrick has struck a chord with faith-based audiences previously with two other films: Fireproof and Courageous.

Grassroots marketing geared toward pastors and churches helped create serious buzz for War Room.

According to Rentrak’s PostTrak, women over 25, which made up 84% of the audience, are giving War Room a 76% definite recommend.

African Americans also supported the film with 44%.

The overall CinemaScore is an impressive A+.

To put things in perspective, the last film to earn that grade this year was American Sniper.
