Good Deeds: Kirk Franklin surprises Maryland Walmart shoppers with generous gift card giveaway

We are most like Christ when we spread love and give. One veteran Gospel artist showed Christ-likeness this weekend and brightened people's holiday in the process.

Share “Bless me, Kirk!” a woman shouted at a Bowie, Maryland Walmart store after GRAMMY® Award-winning recording artist Kirk Franklin announced he would be “blessing some folk.”

On Sunday, Dec. 20, the “Wanna Be Happy?” composer gave away Visa gift cards worth fifty dollars to holiday shoppers.

While in town for Evangel Cathedral’s annual Christmas Celebration, Franklin’s original plan was to purchase and distribute sixty free copies of his latest chart-topping Losing My Religion CD and also buy gifts, and groceries.

Once discovering the albums were not in stock, however, he altered his plans in favor of an impromptu gift card giveaway.

“Excuse me, ladies and gentleman, y’all might not want to leave. I got a blessing for a lot of people and I feel like being in the giving mood,” said the 45-year-old on a megaphone provided by management.

“I feel like blessing some people this holiday season, so if you are in line and if you’re about to spend some money, you’re about to get a little bit of a blessing, because I feel like blessing some folk,” he announced, delighting consumers.

Franklin chose military veterans, a home-schooler, teachers, a Walmart employee, single mothers and some random individuals as recipients of his generosity. There were no shortage of appreciative smiles, cheers and laughter throughout the process.

“Before I leave, let me say, thank y’all for the opportunity to put a smile on your faces,” said Franklin, flanked by fans and holiday shoppers.

Before departing, Franklin, with the help of the crowd, he sang, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas," as the extended hands of shoppers waved in the air, hoping one of the cards Franklin was actively handing out would be theirs.

After passing out the last of the gift cards, the big-hearted Gospel veteran posed for more fan selfies.

“We had fun today,” Franklin said following the event.

Expressing his gratitude to the team at Walmart for their assistance in pulling off the mass giveaway, he said, “You all do an amazing job!”
