WATCH: T.D. Jakes Inspires On 'Arsenio'

Article By Andi Daniels:: EEW Magazine Entertainment News

Talk show host Arsenio Hall, son of a Baptist preacher, welcomed mega pastor Bishop T.D. Jakes to his program Tuesday, May 20, where he told the influential leader how the ministry has impacted his own life.

“I find myself watching you on television and writing sometimes or pausing because you’re saying something I need,” Arsenio said and then, shared an impactful quote from Jakes.

“It is the breaking of life that produces the blessing of life,” he read. “You said that once and I had to leave the television paused for a while because sometimes you have to think about things that T.D. Jakes says.”

When asked to explain it, the New York Times Best-selling author of Instinct: The Power To Unleash Your Inborn Drive said, “When Jesus took the two fish and five loaves of bread, the Bible says He took it, He blessed it, He broke it and gave it to them. You can’t be blessed if you haven’t been broken,” Jakes explained.

“And to those persons who are dealing with tremendous pressure and [are] being broken by life right now, never give up in the breaking process,” the 56-year-old advised, “because out of the crevices and cracks of the broken heart flows the blessings of life, the wisdom, the power—that’s where the stuff comes from!”

During the course of the discussion that spanned Jakes’ humble beginnings in Charleston, West VA; losing a father at a young age; struggling to make ends meet; all the way to advising presidents and pastoring one of the largest churches in America, Jakes transparently shared his life with the audience.

Weeks ago, 56-year-old T.D. Jakes visited the humble West Virginia home he occupied at 26 years old with wife Serita and their two children (Credit: TD Jakes)“I went to a funeral in West Virginia just a few weeks ago and I went back to the house I started my family in and that was the house," Jakes said as Arsenio displayed an image of the successful pastor posing in front of a modest house--a far cry from the lavish Texas estate he now occupies.

"At 26 years old, I had a wife and two kids and one of the three utilities on at any given time. You had to pick which one by the season," he said.

Jakes continued, "One time, the lights were out in the house and I told the kids—my son is back stage—I told them, I said, ‘We’re gonna play a game at night to see who can get to the bed without stomping their foot.’ I said, ‘Whoever gets to the bed wins a prize.’”

He told them that because, according to him, “I couldn’t bear to tell them that I couldn’t keep the utilities on at the same time.”
