TD Jakes On Terrorist Attacks In Kenya: ‘Nobody’s Safe Anywhere, Anytime’

Article By Bethany Adams:: EEW Magazine News Reporter

The faith community is praying for the citizens, visitors and tourists that have been caught up in the horrific, deadly 3-day terrorist attack on an upscale mall in Nairobi, Kenya.

“Nobody’s safe anywhere, anytime,” said Bishop TD Jakes, reflecting on how the Somalia-based Al-Shabaab group took control of the four-story Westgate shopping center Saturday, leaving 62 dead according to official Red Cross numbers.

During remarks on Sunday, September 22, the Dallas mega pastor told The Potter’s House congregation, “Continue to lift them up in prayer,” noting that Nairobi is a place “where we’ve been, where we’ve ministered, where we’ve served and where we have churches, and where we have sons in the faith.”

CNN is reporting that, as of Monday, Kenyan security forces had taken full control of the four-story building from terrorists. If any hostages do remain, according to Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku’s statement during a news briefing, the numbers would be "very, very minimal.”

The attack was launched with an estimated 10 to 15 gunmen who were, according to witnesses, going from store to store, shooting non-Muslims, allowing those who claimed Muslim religious affiliation to go free.  It is reported that 175 people had been wounded. Five were Americans, the State Department said Sunday.

“We need God to heal the land,” said Jakes. “[There are] shootings and killings everywhere . [A] young man right out of Forth Worth wreaked havoc in our nation’s capital,” he added, making reference to 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, the gunman that killed 12 people and injured eight inside a heavily secured building at the Washington, D.C., Navy Yard last Monday. It has gone on record as one of the worst mass shootings ever at a U.S. military facility.

“You don’t know from day to day. You go in the grocery store, you don’t know if you’re gonna get out. Nobody’s safe anywhere, anytime. Thank God for Jesus who protects us and covers every last one of us,” Jakes said, noting the randomized nature of the attacks that have come without warning.

He ended his commentary by pointing out that “We really need to be prayerful, watchful and responsible Christians. This is no time to slack up on your faith, move away from your hope, give up on your joy, move away from the Prince Of Peace. This is the time to stand flat-footed on the oracles of God.”
