What Happened To The Gospel Takeover? Matthew Knowles Looking To Sell 'Music World' Label

Article By Yvette Johnson:: EEW Magazine Entertainment Reporter

It was not too long ago that shrewd businessman Matthew Knowles, 61, seemed perfectly poised to dominate the gospel music genre with his Music World Gospel (MWG) label. Now, that seems nothing more than a distant memory.

Once, Knowles, best known for crafting the successful career of his estranged daughter Beyoncé, boasted signees like Juanita Bynum, Micah Stampley, Brian Courtney Wilson, Vanessa Bell Armstrong and now defunct duo, Trin-i-tee 5:7. But reports are surfacing that a shake-up is happening.

According to EUR Web via,Although no official deals have been made, there have been many major record execs that have confirmed meetings with Knowles about potentially purchasing his label.”

Despite the PR spin-master’s claims that his record and management company under the umbrella of Music World Entertainment had a banner year in 2012, ranking “number 3 overall in market share,” sources say he is working to quietly pawn off Music World to the highest bidder.

This led to divorce from his wife of 31 years, Tina Knowles and later, a professional split from his daughter amid accusations of theft and fraud, for whom he had been a longtime manager.

Before all the drama started, EEW Magazine reported that a confident Knowles revealed his plans to, in his own words to EBONY Magazine, “within four years, be the No. 1 label for faith-based music.”

Knowles’ vision was to reorient the gospel genre, by ditching the label and broadening its appeal.  "I prefer using the words 'inspirational' and 'faith-based. Gospel boxes it in, and people have a preconceived notion as to what that is,” he said.

“People want to be inspired. People want to have hope. When you look at the word 'music,' you see the root word 'muse,' which is inside all of us. You can get that muse from any kind of message...It's a feeling of hope and joy that it brings us, and the world needs that."

What the world needs is Jesus and what Music World needs is a buyer, apparently, which could be a tough sell.

Over the past few years, Knowles’ label has been the place where some gospel careers have languished and died a slow death.

Perhaps that is why artists like Stampley, Wilson, Angel Taylor and Chanelle Haynes (Trin-i-tee 5:7) have jumped ship to find a new team, without Knowles at the helm, to help them navigate the treacherous waters of the music industry.

God always has the final say. When your heart is not pure and you do shady things in the dark they will eventually come to the light. Not surprised by this at all. Not one bit! I saw it comeing.

Matthew Knowles has always been about mastering his craft and dominating. He is a smart man. I'll give him that. But there are things that go beyond just being smart that play into a successful career. You have to have integrity and that is just something unfortunately he lacks. It has come back to bit him in the butt

@Ericka I dont think it is that spiritual or deep. This has nothing to do with God. Matthew just burned too many people and they got tired of his mess

This has been going around the industry for some time now. It must rrally be hitting the fan. Matthew is over in music. He will be old news in a few years.

He's a smart man. No denying that. I wouldn't count him out though. He will come back in time. Just not with gospel. I don't think that is his area.
