MUSIC BUZZ: Kirk Franklin Refuses to Go Secular

In a day and age where compromise runs rampant in the gospel music industry, it's nice to see popular artists like Kirk Franklin standing their ground. See what he said in response to a "major player" in the music industry who tried to convince the multi GRAMMY Award-winning gospel artist to go secular.

Kirk Franklin tweeted his 200,000+ Twitter followers:

A major player in the music game just told me 'sales are down, folk ain't making no money; when u gone stop doing gospel & make REAL money?'

His response:

My name is Kirk Franklin. and I do JESUS music.

Good answer Kirk!

According to reports, CD sales dropped 21% in 2010 to $3.36 billion, down from $4.27 billion in 2009, said RIAA, whose members include the industry's largest record labels. Combined, digital and physical music sales slipped 11% to $6.9 billion in the U.S. last year, roughly half the amount 10 years ago--a trend that has many music executives worried.

And when it comes to gospel, which is a much smaller niche than R&B and Hip Hop, there isn't as much money to be made doing "JESUS music."

That's why gospel artists must be more passionate about spreading the message of Christ, than growing their bank accounts. Otherwise, they will be drawn away by a desire for selfish gain, which will inevitably lead to compromise.

Even with declining sales, however, Kirk Franklin isn't doing too shabby. His latest album, Hello Fear, topped Billboard charts and is blessing people around the country.

If you haven't already, pick up a copy and support good gospel music.
