Are You a Victim of Christian Catch Phrases?

For those of us who grew up in and around the black church all our lives, we know the catch phrases and need no explanation. But could we be isolating those who don't know "Christian speak" with all our rhetoric? An interesting article on CNN's religion blog (though EEW BUZZ editors don't agree with all its contents) accuses many Christians (not just African American) of being "pious parrots," meaning "they constantly repeat Christian phrases that they don’t understand or distort." Could you be guilty? More after the jump...

President Obama Shares Wish for 50th Birthday

It's no secret that Mr. President has hit a recent rough patch filled with criticism and political wrangling. With Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West publicly criticizing his mishandling of the poor and middle class, and all the political fights over the debt ceiling, it's no surprise that Obama has something very specific on his 50th birthday wish list...

TV BUZZ: Sherri Shepherd Drops Ball in Biblical Debate, Again (Video)

"It's too restrictive," Whoopi Goldberg said of the Bible on a recent taping of ABC's The View while co-hosts discussed gay marriage. When Goldberg began pointing out the things the Bible condemns aside from gay marriage that, according to her, "shouldn't be taken literally," outspoken Christian, Sherri Shepherd, missed the opportunity to steer the conversation in the right direction. See what she said that made EEW BUZZ editors hang our heads and sigh deeply...

NEW STUDY: College-Educated Blacks Struggling

There was a time when getting a college education guaranteed that an African American person could make a better life for them and their family.

Those times are no more.

A new study just released by the Urban League shows the unemployment rate for blacks with a four-year college degree has tripled from 1992 while overall black unemployment levels are nearing 1982 levels when it was close to 20 percent, the Associated Press reports.

VIDEO BUZZ: CNN Features Discussion about Black Women Going Natural

EEW BUZZ editors thought you might find this article and video interesting about black women getting in touch with their natural texture. While the choice to relax or go natural should be a personal one (and in no way serves as some sort of "blackness" barometer), the discussion is popping up in mainstream more and more.

Pop the hood to watch the video.

Report: Number of Black Women Pastors on the Rise

Adam Parker // The Post and Courier Clarissa Walker Whaley was recently appointed moderator of the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery. She was installed at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church.

Women pastors still create all sorts of controversy in the black church as well as traditional white churches. As recent as 2008, a media fire storm broke out when Gospel Today Magazine was pulled from Christian bookstore shelves for its inclusion of female pastors on the cover. Remember that?

But, could a new day be dawning for black women who feel called to lead congregations?
