Share When life gets tough, where is the first place you turn?

When you’re sick, do place all your faith in the doctor to make you better? When you feel lonely, do you rely on your friends to be around whenever you need them? When you’re being spiritually attacked, do you run to God?

If the answer to that last one was yes, good on you, but God should be the answer to all of these questions. We tend to rely on so many earthly sources when trouble comes our way, because we often forget that the real battle takes place behind the scenes, in the spirit realm.

We must fully grasp the concept that the enemy is real and he is our adversary, so we can  recognize that he is at work. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us in the ESV, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

All the obstacles you face in life are not random occurrences; some are stumbling blocks and blockades set up strategically by the enemy to be the end of you, and the end of your purpose.

He operates in life-threatening illnesses so the gospel dies with you; he’ll have all your friends turn against you, so you’ll feel forsaken, and question whether or not God really cares. He’ll do all this with the intention of destroying you, but God has a way of preserving us through the battle.

Psalm 119:50 (ESV) says, “This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.” The Word of God soothes us because it is filled with the promises of God, promises for every season.

When the enemy tries to introduce destruction into God’s plan for your life, the Word says, “I have plans to prosper you, and not to harm you”- Jeremiah 29:11.

When sickness tries to tell you you’re done, and the Lord has forgotten about you, the Word says, “Bless the Lord, who heals all your diseases”- Psalm 103:2-3.

And when you realize the enemy is attacking, don’t worry or panic. Recite 1 John 4:4: “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

The Word of God is not only your comfort, but the Bible says it is “the sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17), so it is also your weapon against the devil.

The prescribed medicine cannot save you, and a friend’s loving hug cannot save you. Only God can do that. So trust in His Word, depend on it, and not only will you be comforted, you will have a powerful weapon to wield against the enemy the next time he tries to bring you down.

God, help me use Your word as my weapon when I am suffering and under attack so my faith and my spirit will be strengthened. In Jesus' name, Amen.
