Share We have all kinds of home remedies for dealing with down days: turn on a cheesy movie; indulge in our favorite junk foods; hang out with friends, even.

However, too often, we fail to view drawing near to God as a remedy.

But listening to worship music, reading the Word, and hearing a good sermon works wonders—not just for your mood, but for your soul.

If the skies in your life are overcast and you're feeling a bit gloomy, read these scriptures to soothe your soul and add joy to your day:

1.) Philippians 4:4 (NIV)- “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

Although life has its ups and downs, you can rejoice in the fact that God is consistent. He never changes; He is always good, even when life is bad.

2.) Psalm 16:11 (ESV)- “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Delight in God, for in His presence alone there is fullness of joy! True fulfillment and sustained joy is found in the Lord. A silly movie might distract you from life’s troubles, but the Lord can uplift you and give you hope in the midst of the trouble.

3.) Psalm 150:6 (NLT)- “Let everything that breathes sing praises to the LORD! Praise the LORD!”

Praise God in the middle of your situation, because He is worthy, because He is good, and because He deserves it. Not only will God be glorified, but in that moment, your spirit will soar above the negative circumstances in the valley.

4.) Psalm 119:103 (ESV)- “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”

Spend time reading the sweet, calming, reassuring words in the Bible. Also read and digest articles like this when you need encouragement. They offer the best comfort food without the added calories that expand your waistline! The Lord is our comforter and His Word never fails.

5.) Psalm 28:7 (NIV)- “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.”

Rely on God to be your strength and your joy when the road gets rough. Realize that He’s already made a way out, and thank Him in advance by giving Him your trust as well as your worship.

Today I pray Psalm 5:11 over you, which says, “But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you” (NIV).
