Feeling shackled by guilt over your mistakes? God doesn’t hold it over your head

Share Are you feeling shackled by guilt over your mistakes? Are some past (or even present) shortcomings in your character haunting you? Are you involuntarily playing that maddening mental guessing game called, “Are these my own internal feelings of guilt or is this God’s wrath and condemnation?”

Stop that crazy cycle once and for all. If you are mistaking your own unforgiveness of yourself for God’s unforgiveness and punishment of you, know this: The Lord does not hold our faults over our heads.

You must learn to separate your guiltiness from His mercifulness. God forgives you, so why have you not stopped condemning yourself yet?

The moment you repent of any sin you have committed, which means acknowledging the mistake and turning away from the behavior, God forgives you.

Even if you are dealing with consequences of a faulty decision, the Lord yet loves you, despite all your mistakes, missteps and misbehaviors.

Though it is difficult for all of us to process the endless mercies of God, if we accept divine wisdom, insight and revelation, He will show us the truth.

Here are 5 scriptures to help you receive forgiveness for your wrongs:

1 John 1:9 (NIV)- “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” All it takes for God to forgive us is an honest confession of what we’ve done wrong. He does not require that we bathe in our guilt, or send up thirty apologies. As soon as you say sorry, your sins are forgiven, and you can be free of guilt.

Ephesians 1:7 (NIV)- “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” Christians have the best insurance; we are covered by the blood of Jesus. It is because of Christ’s death that we are free from paying the price for our sins. His blood activates God’s grace, so that when we repent, we never have to fear judgement.

1 John 2:1-2 (NIV)- “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” Nobody’s perfect; we all sin. And if you’ve messed up, know that Jesus will surely bring your apology before the Lord and ensure your forgiveness.

Romans 8:1 (ESV)- “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Jesus is our free ticket into heaven. If you sin today, you’re still on the highway to heaven. Because by His grace you have been forgiven, and by His sacrifice you have been freed from the death penalty. Repent, receive His forgiveness, and thank God for His mercy.

Psalm 130:3-4 (ESV)- “If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.” If God made it His business to remember all of our sins, and judge us accordingly, no one would be saved. But by His grace and for His glory, He has forgiven us for every transgression.

Our God is a God of justice, so how amazing is it that He would forego justice by freeing us from condemnation and overlooking our sins, rather than giving us the punishment we deserve?

Because of the blood of Jesus, His own goodness, love and mercy, He forgives us. So, if you’ve said sorry and turned away from your wrongdoing, know that your Heavenly Father has accepted your apology. He delights to see you living in the freedom He has granted.
