Calling all control freaks: Here are two words that will scare you out of your mind…

I know, nightmare inducing words, right? If you’re a control freak, you probably live by this saying: “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” But, to your dismay, our destiny only responds to one operator—God.

Where we are headed in life and how we get there is totally up to Him, whether we like it or not. We can’t control our current circumstances or our future, no matter how hard we try.

Here are some passages of scripture to remind you of who’s really in control:

The History of Creation (Genesis 1:1-31)- The Lord created all things in the earth and saw that what He had made was good. We were not there telling Him what to create and when to create it—if we were, cockroaches probably wouldn’t exist. God knew what was best for the world, just like He knows what is best for your life. Cockroaches may seem repulsive, but they serve a purpose that few people understand—it’s the same with God’s plan for our lives. All that He allows to happen to us serves a purpose, although we may not understand how. So let God figure out your tomorrow, He has a much better handle on things than you do.

The Lord Responds to Job (Job 38, 39, & 40:1-2)- We were not there when the Lord laid the foundations of the earth, nor do we fully understand all the things of this world. How can we think we are capable of managing our entire life when we barely understand the world as it is? We are not omniscient, and if you don’t know everything, you certainly can’t run everything.

Psalm 24:1 (KJV)- “The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” Have you ever had someone offer unwanted advice on how to raise your kids, or how to run your house? Isn’t that annoying? Welcome to what you put the Lord through every day. Always offering Him advice on how He should run your life—when this should happen, why it should happen this way, why that shouldn’t happen, on and on. How are you going to tell the Creator what to do with His creations? He knows you better than you know yourself, and therefore His way will always be the best way.

Romans 11:34 (NIV)- “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” No one can advise the Lord, because no one’s knowledge is infinite but God’s. For example: it would make no sense for an experienced, licensed driver to receive instructions on how to drive from a teenager with a learner’s permit. We’re continually learning about life, but God already understands it all. If we trust Him to guide us, we can be sure we’re on the right track, whereas if we take the wheel, an accident is sure to happen.

1 Chronicles 29:11 (NIV)- “Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.” Remember this important truth: God is sovereign. No one is qualified to lead His people but Him. We are nothing without God. He is our strength, joy, peace, comforter, Father and friend. Without God’s guidance, we are lost.

Yes, letting go will be scary at first. You’re going to get thrown into a lot of things that you never would have dreamed of, but know the hand that is guiding you is steady and sure, even when you aren’t.

Even if you are regarded as a leader by other people, know that you are a servant who simply follows commands. Any position of authority is given by the Lord, the Highest Authority, and can only be well-maintained with His help.

We are not in control; God is.
