Share Do you desire to feel closer to your Father in heaven, but you’re not sure how to get there? Do you sometimes feel as though you’re not as connected to God as you once were, or have wanted to be? How, then, do you strengthen your relationship with God?

The answer lies in Empowering Everyday Women Ministries' recommended reading.

Verses of the Day:

1 Thessalonians 5, verses 16, 17 and 18, which we will be reading in the English Standard Version. Now let’s jump right in:

1 Thessalonians 5:16- “Rejoice always.”

This sounds to many like an impossible task. How can someone rejoice always, when every occasion does not seem to allow rejoicing? Yes, some days the sun doesn’t shine—but we are not rejoicing in the natural sun. Our joy stems from the Son we carry in our heart, and His name is Jesus. We rejoice because we have been saved from our sins, due to His great love for us.

We rejoice because God is always good, even when our circumstances try to convince us otherwise. We rejoice because we have hope that the sorrows of this world will not last forever, and we can look forward to an eternal dwelling with our Father.

When you realize where your joy truly lies, you will find that “rejoicing always” is not such a hard feat to accomplish.

1 Thessalonians 5:17- “Pray without ceasing.”

The greatest joy is found in worship, so verse 16 fits perfectly with verse 17. Prayer is a form of worship. We need relationship with the Father, and there is no better way to cultivate that relationship than by taking time to talk to Him.

The Lord loves to hear from us, according to Proverbs 15:8, which says in the NLT “… he delights in the prayers of the upright.” The best relationships are built on communication. I promise, if you give the Lord your time and just speak with Him, not only will your relationship be strengthened, but your joy will be replenished.

1 Thessalonians 5:18- “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Thank God for being your Rock that cannot be shaken, for being your peace, your joy, your friend, and your safe place. Thank God that He hears your prayers, and whatever you ask for in Jesus’ name will surely be given to you. Even when times get tough, thank Him. Thank Him that this test is not here to make you bitter, but to make you better.

Thank Him that through the hard times, you are more than a conqueror through Him who loved us (Romans 8:37)! In every season, whether good or bad, there is always a reason to be thankful, you just have to open your eyes and see it.

Today, celebrate the Lord and all He’s done for you. Pray and tell Him how you feel, and what you need, and thank Him that it is already done.

These three things—joy in the Lord, prayer, and thankfulness, will make your relationship with God not just as strong as you hoped, but stronger.
