Virginity is possible: Here are 5 ways to successfully practice abstinence

Getty/Mint Images/Tim RobbinsArticle By Corrinne Justice // EEW Magazine Purity

Share Let me tell you something you may not hear enough: remaining a virgin is a realistic goal.

Virginity is not some far-fetched ideal that only the most “mature” Christians or stubborn prudes can stick to. The Lord desires that we all reserve sex for marriage and He does not require anything of us that is impossible.

But if you’re not sure how to continue pushing forward on your purity walk, here are 5 things to keep in mind:

#1 You’re not alone. Not only is God with you, but others are, too. In Hebrews 12:1 NLT, the Bible says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Realize that there are others who have run this purity race before you, and be encouraged that you’re not the only one. Many have tried and succeeded, such as Tim Bowman Jr. and his wife Brelyn.

#2 Seek encouragement! Since you are serious about committing your body to the Lord by abstaining from sex, receive empowerment by reading books that will encourage you to remain abstinent, such as The New A-List: Abstinence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder, by EEW Magazine’s own Dianna Hobbs. Listen to the testimonies of virgins who held out until marriage, or attend a purity conference and connect with others who are currently walking beside you on the path to purity. The Bible recommends encouragement from others (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

#3 Know your Word. The Word of God is our greatest weapon (Ephesians 6:17) and prepares us to fight and win any battle we may face. If you are struggling against lust, speak the truth found in the scriptures. The Lord’s Word will never fail you in your time of need.

#4 Be led by the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). Pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you along this path of purity. The way to be led by the Spirit is by staying in the Word of God and praying consistently. When you know God’s words and His ways, His Spirit can lead you toward righteousness and away from the lusts of the flesh. The Holy Spirit works within you to give you understanding of God’s word, thereby allowing you to stay in His will.

#5 Fall in love with Jesus. “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15) Your love for the Lord should serve as your greatest motivator to stay pure. When you are filled with true adoration for and devotion to our Creator, the passion to please Him will push you to do your best to follow His commandments. Love is the precursor to every tip previously posted on this list; if you love Jesus, you’re already on the right track.

Though the Lord loves us, even if we don't live perfectly, strive not to abuse His compassion and grace. Continue press toward the mark (Philippians 3:14) and aiming always to do what is pleasing in the sight of the Lord.
