WATCH: Fantasia sings powerful gospel song 'I Made It' co-written by Tye Tribbett on GMA

Article By Rebecca Johnson // EEW Magazine

"Thank You for never leaving me Lord Jesus!" sang American Idol alum Fantasia Barrino during a power-packed performance of her new gospel song, "I Made It" on Good Morning America Monday.

Co-written by fellow GRAMMY® Award-winning recording artist, Tye Tribbett, the song testifies of her journey from brokenness to wholeness.

“Wow! This was so cool to wake up to today,” wrote Tribbett on Instagram, feeling obviously proud that a melody he helped pen was being performed on a national stage by one of America’s most celebrated R&B vocalists.

Explaining the origin of the collaboration, the “He Turned It” singer wrote, “I got the call to write a song for Fantasia and I thought, easy! All I did was combine our testimonies, thought about her journey and her struggles, and her victories, and the words came easy!”

The excited musician, who will be performing the song with Barrino on an upcoming episode of his new BET gospel show, "Joyful Noise," told his social media followers it is an “honor to bring glory to God on such a platform.”

Barrino, 32, whose roots are in gospel music, releases her new album, The Definition Of...., today. Though "I Made It" is an overtly gospel song, the entire album cannot be categorized, since the singer is unwilling to be limited by conventional musical expectations of the public.

"Everything is so boxed in, and everyone has a certain view of what an artist should be,” she told Vogue.com in a phone interview. “Well, that’s weird. If you know what I should be, that doesn’t make me an artist, correct? You’re prostituting my gift, telling me what to wear and how to sing so it can sound like what’s hot right now.”

The defiant and determined singer is now playing by her own rules and and refusing to be defined by the  times, others' expectations, or genres.
