Kierra Sheard reveals heart-breaking reason for her recent weight gain, vows to get healthier

Emotional eaters often sabotage their weight management goals in times of difficulty, which is precisely what happened to one of America’s favorite Christian vocalists.

Share Never judge a book by its cover. There’s always an untold story written on the pages of a person’s heart.

Gospel singer Kierra Sheard is sharing the reason for her recent weight gain: the loss of a close friend.

In a new blog post, the BET “Sunday Best” host says, during her days as a panel judge on the hit show, “I worked out before every show in my hotel room until I got a call that my best friend wasn't doing well in the hospital.”

In the online journal entry titled, “Ridding Myself Of All The Crap!” the 28-year-old continues, “Sadly, I lost her to sickle cell and I noticed that I completely stopped working out and just started eating whatever I wanted.”

After the blood disorder ended the life of Tamika Juanita Halliburton, Sheard, who had dropped 80 pounds after formerly tipping the scales at 300 pounds, medicated her pain with unwholesome comfort foods.

Previously motivated by The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier life by Daniel Amen, Mark Hyman and Pastor Rick Warren, Sheard said of the book, “I learned so much from it and this was what motivated me to make things better. I finally found a workout plan that was enjoyable. Zumba!”

She found the dance routines energizing and fun. But after falling off the health wagon, ditching workouts and packing on the pounds, Sheard says she felt tired and sluggish.

I was getting close to having to ask the flight attendant for an extended seatbelt. I started to realize that it was effecting my drive and passion in my career,” she admits.

But now, the “Free” singer’s choice to unburden herself through transparency is her way of publicizing her determination to free herself of the emotional baggage responsible for the excess pounds.  

“I am telling my story to say that I may have gone a few steps back but as long as I have the inner challenge within myself to get back to being better, I must do it,” she says.

The Detroit native, who has been traveling and ministering as part of gospel singer Tasha Cobbs’ “One Place Live” tour, has already started the process.

“Today I am going back to my Zumba class! I started yesterday!” she excitedly shares, revealing her plan to attend class 3-4 times a week.

To help her stay on the path, Sheard quotes a scripture as the foundation of her transformational journey from Hebrews 12:1 NLT: “…let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.”

We’re all rooting for her.
