No matter where Aretha Franklin goes, she's just a church girl at heart

Aretha Franklin may be known as the “Queen of Soul,” but her ties to gospel music are unbreakable.

On Sunday, Nov. 22, Thanksgiving week, the soulful singer is bringing out big names for her annual Gospel concert and service.

This year, Franklin’s Gospel Legends event will feature multiple award-winning recording artists Pastor Shirley Caesar and the Williams Brothers, that also joined the 72-year-old during President Barack Obama’s “In Performance at the White House” series earlier this year.

Franklin got her start in the church. At just 12 years old, she hit the road with her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, whose sermons sold millions of copies on Chess Records.

In 1972, Franklin recorded a live gospel album, Amazing Grace, which went on to become one of the best-selling gospel albums of all time.

The Detroit native’s gospel event will carry her back to her roots, to New Bethel Baptist Church, founded by her father.

The event is free and open to the public.

Franklin, a multi-Grammy Award-winning artist has received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Honor in 2005.
