WATCH: Woman's Brutal Domestic Violence Journey Leads Her to Christ

Karen Fikes, domestic abuse survivor, shares her testimony (CBN)

Article By Vanda Albright // EEW Magazine Contributor

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the perfect time to raise awareness of all the lives affected by abuse and to discover ways to assist and support victims.

One woman, Karen Fikes, is sharing her testimony of how God freed her from the assault of a murderous ex-boyfriend.

In a compelling interview with CBN, Karen says she knows she could have been dead, especially since her then partner went on to murder someone else.

“It could have been me,” reflects the now happily married wife, evangelist and mother of three.

For a year and a half, Steve, whom Karen met through her sister, showered her with love and affection. But after 18 months, things went south and turned sour.

“He acted like he owned me,” she tells CBN. “He felt like he had some type of control over me, to where if I didn’t do what he wanted me to do, or think the way he wanted me to think, or say what he wanted me to say, he would go off on one of his fits.”

Karen’s situation is not unique. Domestic violence, which occurs in all communities and all countries, affects someone in your school, neighborhood, church, or workplace.

Women ages 18-24 are three-times as likely to be abuse victims, and one in four women will be physically abused by an intimate partner at some point in her life, no matter her education level or social standing.

One terrifying night, Karen woke up to find her abusive boyfriend Steve hovering over her with a butcher knife.

“I just saw my life flash before me and I thought I was getting ready to die,” she says.

In a fit of rage, Steve eventually left.

“I said, ‘God please, if You don’t help me out of this relationship, I am going to end up dead,” she prayed in earnest. “I need You to help me. I need You to help me out of this relationship.”

CBN reports, the following day, Steve phoned Karen from jail. He had been charged with murdering someone else and was later sentenced to over 20 years in prison.

Realizing that it was the goodness and mercy of God that saved her, Karen gave her heart to Jesus Christ and is now working for the Lord.
