Dorinda Clark Cole Defends Artist Formerly Known As Tonéx: ‘Everyone Goes Through’

By Elaine Byrne:: EEW Magazine Entertainment Reporter

The faith-based community remembers the artist formerly known as Tonéx coming out as gay, but is he now coming home?

At Evangelist Dorinda Clark-Cole’s 15th annual “Singers, Musicians & Arts Conference” (SMAC) on August 14-17 in Toledo, OH, according to EEW Magazine’s insiders, the 38-year-old performer, real name Anthony Charles Williams II, appeared to be showing signs of transformation.

During the gospel music event, the seven-time Stellar Award-winning artist, best known for his smash hit, “Make Me Over,” was spotted crying, praising, and even breaking out in a dance alongside Clark-Cole—an image she posted on Facebook August 18.

Williams’ jubilant expressions of rejoicing in a church environment have left the faith community wondering if this should be viewed as proof positive that he is making a return to a Christian lifestyle that denounces homosexuality as sin.

In 2009, during an appearance on The Word Network’s “The Lexi Show,” in response to Lexi Allen’s questions, the vocalist stunned the conservative faith community with his open admission of same-sex attractions, hinting that he had given over to the lifestyle. Then, in 2010, Williams was profiled in The New Yorker magazine in a piece that also exposed an undercover gay culture in gospel music.

“I think the interesting notion is that people kind of knew [I was gay].  It’s just as long as it wasn’t confirmed I was deemed okay,” the out artist told in a 2011 interview.

But in the face of Williams’ much buzzed-about public praise break, gospel enthusiasts and Christians who say they have been praying for his deliverance, are waiting to see what happens next.

Since 2010, he has adopted the stage name “B. Slade” and performs as an independent R&B/Glam Pop artist, finding his niche in the small, but growing LGBT music market.

While some have expressed joy over what appear to be his first steps—literally and figuratively—in the right direction, others have wondered aloud about the genuineness of Williams’ praise and brokenness in God’s presence.

Despite what others feel, Clark-Cole, is defending the prodigal son of gospel on her Facebook page. “We will continue to pray for our brother that God will keep him in perfect peace,” she wrote. “Everyone goes through, heartaches, pain and wrong doings, but we serve a God that sits high and looks low, we know him to be a healer and a deliver, so with that being said, is that we will pray and continue to uplift my brother.”

While the online debate has reached fever pitch, with hundreds of commenters expressing their opinions, the journalist, Allen, who originally broke the story about Williams’ sexuality on her show, chided those judging his praise.

“Now take your opinions and sweep around your own front door. We always do the most and wanna talk about someone's salvation when we already have instructions given to us BY GOD HIMSELF!”

During her tirade, she remarked, “No matter what's going on in his PERSONAL LIFE, LET EVERYTHING that hath breath praise the Lord.”

One of the SMAC conference attendees, Debora Gregory, also came to the controversial singer’s defense on Facebook, sharing her personal take on what transpired in Ohio.

“For most of you commenting you were not there when Tonex came on Thursday night to hear Bishop Hezakiah Walker preach you did not see his face he was broken and hurt and when he called us to the alter he was one of the ones who fell just crying out to God,” she explained in detail.

“He was wounded and tired and at the end of himself he had to turn it over to God. He was restored on Saturday afternoon and testified on Saturday night that's when he changed his name to Anthony Clark Williams and praised God for restoring his joy (his words).”

Gregory concluded, “None of us can say if he was telling us the truth but we can continue to pray for our brother. Please pray for each other because we all stand in the need of prayer.”

So far, no word from Williams on what this all means for his lifestyle or music career. However, he did decide to pull his latest deeply personal and profanity-filled album, “My September Issue,” originally slated for an August 19 release date.

“This LP was lawful for my private journal but not for everybody,” Williams said in a statement, adding, “I have to be mindful of bigger global assignments in my near future which trump the need to publicly express my personal tragedies.”

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

No flesh, can glory in His sight, it's not ok to play with God. Repent for the Kingdom of God is at Hand. God loves Ton'ex, but He died for his sins

"I have to be mindful of bigger global assignments" He is not stupid he understands th e music business and that he isnt making much money being the outcast. He can praise all he wants but he has yet to openly to denounce the gay lifestyle. If you say you are a christian be that and stick with it. Dont be a lukewarm christian having the look, cleaning up nice quoting the scriptures, and taliking the "church talk' but live it. It really isnt that hard being what you love.

Tonex please do not go back into churchanity bondage. The fundamentalist/conservative cults will destroy you once they get you. Dorinda has made many hateful, vile and homophobic statements in the past. Love God, but beware of church people. I ran for my life many years ago. I will never let go of His hand. We love you in CHRIST JESUS. GOD saved me 35yrs ago and believe me most are cowards. BECAUSE OF CALVARY....Rev. Marichal

My husband and I were just talking about him the other day. It really hurt my heart initially when he turned his back on God. However, listening to his lyrics you could tell he was struggling with some things in life. I have always been a big fan of Anthony Charles Williams II aka Tonex. Despite his ups and downs and many transitions, he is a gifted and talent man that I believe is anointed to sing the gospel. It may have taken him a while to fully embrace his calling, but I also believe he is now working towards becoming what God predestined him to become, the image of Jesus Christ.

The truth is we have to stop compromiseing JESUS word. He will never go against his on word. We have to also speak about what will happen when we are disobedient. He'll is real and everyone will not be going to heaven. We don't mind keeping it real when we talk about the forgiving JESUS but we don't want to keep it real when it's time to talk about the JESUS that punishes for disobedient. Let's stop playing like JESUS does not have a wrath side of him that he uses also.

Anyone that wants to know where Tonex is currently at in his life: Just view his WEEKLY radio show. I stumbled on a clip on Youtube and watched for a few min and couldn't believe the vulgarity, cursing and blatant disregard that he spits out of his mouth on a regular basis. This is the most current captured info about him on his show that 'he' puts out on youtube every week.

How is this so?? How can someone that taught the truth do this? How can someone who supposedly is turning 'back to the Lord' do this so easily?? Personally, I believe its what happens to people that do not obey the truth, but yet at one time experienced the truth or even taught the truth. The Bible says that when we hear the Word and are not 'doers' of the Word, then we are deceived. He is deceived in thinking he's ok, when he should know he is not. Sure, at times he struggles with the heaviness of knowing something isn't right, but until he fully yields himself to go "God's way, which is by obeying God's Word" this will continue until God deals w/him. That's why this should not just be the time people just 'PRAY for Tonex', but really should be the time people 'WARN, Tonex'.

We, as the Body of Christ, are so judgmental. This is a matter for God (Jesus Christ) and not us/you. The Bible says to FORGIVE! It also says, how many. The woman caught in the very act. Where are your accusers? I do not accusers? Go and sin no more! One last thing, NO ONE can see if a person's salvation is real or not. We MUST accept their confession. It is a matter between man/woman and God (Jesus Christ). Not ours!
Read your Bible for more then pointing your finger.

I admit that when I found out about Tonex being gay, as a fan of his music I was shocked because of the image he portrayed of being a minister of the Gospel. It's truly a sad situation that Tonex has been turned over to a reprobate mind..God says in 2 Peter 2:21 for it were better not to have not known the way of righteousness than after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. We all fall short of the glory of God...but are we to stay in the sin we have fallen into?? He is truly an anointed and gifted minstrel/psalmist God given. His gifts have made room for him...I pray that He will truly allow himself to hear what the Spirit of the Lord is saying to him...if my people who are called by my name, would humble themselves, turn from there wicked way, seek my face and pray, then will i hear from heaven and heal their land. The enemy has him entangled with yokes of bondage and Tonex, now in his present state is not a threat to his kingdom, oh, but if He would come to himself and repent, his eyes will be opened and the spirits that once operated in satan's kingdom will be defeated because Tonex would deny himself and take up his cross to follow Jesus Christ. Prayer is a powerful believers we can touch and agree that he will be delivered and set free of satan's wicked devices in the name of Jesus!! as for dorinda...the word of God does say let everything that have breath praise the Lord, but there are also commandments that we are to obey and live by as well. Justification don't fly when you see your brother or sister in the Lord in error. We are to go to them in love and show them the error of their ways. I pray Tonex's total deliverance in Jesus name. I have not listened to any of his songs since in the box, but I came across his song Deliver...I pray God will....grace and peace beloveds.
