T.D. Jakes Condemns Supporting Only Popular Preachers: ‘I Am So Sick of this Hollywood Spirit'

BY Carolyn Albright:: EEW BUZZ

What’s fame got to do with it? Far too much, at least when it comes to Christians supporting certain ministers of the gospel, according to Dallas mega pastor Bishop T.D. Jakes.

“I am so sick of this Hollywood spirit that has overtaken the church!” he told his congregation.

On Sunday, April 8, while promoting an upcoming worship service featuring largely unknown guest ministers, The Potter’s House leader expressed displeasure over the amount of focus placed on preachers’ popularity.

“We do not have to have big names to have a big move of God,” he said. “I got filled up with the Holy Ghost by somebody that didn’t have no name at all.”

But nowadays, “no name” preachers—those who are not exposed to the masses through national media and large preaching platforms—have trouble attracting crowds and filling up the church pews.

Furthermore, the rise of the mega church has crippled some leaders who are considered "small time" or ineffective if their membership has not reached thousands.

Research shows, in 1960, there was 1 mega church for every 7.5 million Americans. In 2010, there was 1 for every 200,000 Americans, and growth is continuing.

In the minds of many, bigger is better and more popular means more powerful.

But Jakes disapproves of the “only-follow-the-most-popular-preachers” model and is inviting lesser known speakers to address his congregants.

“I was saved for years and didn’t see anybody who was on TV,” he said, adding, “We gotta put this Hollywood spirit out of the church and go back to moving in the power of the Holy Ghost. “

Last June, he celebrated 35 years in ministry with appearances from his friends, Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry and a host of other celebs. His mass appeal, however, did not come overnight. He often speaks of his early days, dealing with sparse crowds, small offerings, and lack of general support from the public.

A far cry from his humble start, in 2001, Time Magazine named Jakes “America’s Best Preacher,” comparing him to Billy Graham.

His own reputation aside, he continues to give honor to the biggest name of all: Jesus.

Preach Bishop Jakes! Now this is the kind of stuff I like to hear. This Hollywood spirit is a mess and this is why so many people are stuck on leaders who are not walking right and doing dirty because they are focused on a big name: Eddie Long, Jamal Bryant, Paula White, Zachary Tims (deceased), Noel Jones etc. etc. We need to stop placing so much confidence in man and trust God. There is a shift coming in the Kingdom. God is bringing new leaders of integrity on the scene. I'm ready for it!

That's good to hear coming from one of the biggest pastor's in the world; who has major Hollywood connections and movies. But I understand what he is sayng about the Hollywood spirit, glorifying man and celebrity and bringing that mess into the church. It's worng and God is going to clean house. It's time to reeevaluate and get ourselves together.

Wow,and wow again! I'm stunned that Jakes of all people would nip at the medium that has fed him well all these years;what gives,Mr. Jakes? Are you now so surfeited and fat with the world's goods obtained through the extortions and cons of the so-called"prosperity gospel" you feel that its time to distance yourself from it? Why? Careful,Jakes! You still need the master scam-artist network TBN;Paul Crouch will drop you like a bad habit should you stop being a shill for them;they'll be happy to find somebody to scream,"INCREASEr!!"(You still do that, don't you?) All the pulpit pimps Ponzi schemes, their"god for sale" false doctrines, their world-loving,hireling-oriented,"have-a-need,plant-a-seed"(Paul Crouch's favorite spiel)false teachings are finally"coming home to roost";hopefully the spiritually dull,Biblically illerate, undiscerning,"god is their belly"churches are finally waking up!!! Thank God!! Finally tired of being robbed, scammed, extorted, and straight-out PIMPED by these crooks!!! WAKE UP,CHURCH!

Seriously this is the pot calling the skillet black .... He has been one of the main ones in promoting this hollywood mess and now wants to back off from it . You helped creae the monster and now that it has grown beyond your expectations and people are starting to see you want to back away ... Kind of like throwing stones and hiding your hands.

April 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJay Mill

Amen Laurence, this is STRAIGHT UP the pot calling the kettle. How is he going to complain about this when he STARTED it, he was at the forefront of starting the mega church mess, him and Eddie Long, and still is, so how can he now criticize it???? This is hilarious!! And some of you are applauding him for this comment??

April 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnita

@Anita: Yes, I agree with the comment. Just because a pastor doesn't have a mega church doesn't mean he is inferior. As far as Bishop Jakes starting a mega church "mess," I know nothing about that. Honestly, I don't find anything wrong with having a large church, if you will do right by God and His people while leading it. I don't attend a mega church and probably never will, but I won't knock it, unless I see that the pastor is out for his own personal gain and not for God, like Eddie Long and many others. If God reveals to me that he is a phony in the pulpit, I'll back off, but until then, I shall continue listening to his messages, along with Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer.

Thank you Pastor Jakes for speaking up against this spirit that has influenced many Pastors. I enjoy your messages and will continue to listen. God Bless!

Interesting article and commentary. I am happy to hear this coming from him. It actually is encouraging. I don't think we should hold it against Bishop Jakes that he is a mega preacher. But I really hope this is a true trend beginning of giving very gifted speakers an opportunity. Some of the most unpopular speakers are the most gifted and anointed ones.

REALLY? This coming from the FIRST MEGA preacher to start in his own stream off movies...released WHERE? IN HOLLYWOOD. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! I guess he's tired of it b/c he can't make more money off of 'this spirit.' Heard WTAL, Day 7 was a total flop. LOL. I loved bishop...when he didn't go 'mega.' Before HE HIMSELF was possessed by the Hollywood spirit.

Im glad he's at this place love this man im going to be on the stage ready to bless God and his ppl don't hate when it's my time

April 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPreacher

My comment isn't in support of Jakes, but my detestment for ignorance. Folks crediting Jakes with starting the mega-church shows their ignorance and I have been taught it's one thing to be ignorant, but an entirely different thing to open one's mouth and show it.

Charles Spurgeon in the mid to late 1800 is the father of a mega church. He was a baptist preacher who created multiple streams of revenue. Man if you don't truly understand something be quiet until you can render an intelligent statement.

April 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterReginald

This article even shows Jakes' misunderstanding of Scripture. He says "I got filled up with the Holy Ghost by somebody that didn't have no big name at all." Ummm, we are not filled with the Holy Spirit by another person other than God Himself. Not from some other man or pastor or preacher. God gives us HIS SPIRIT. The Spirit is not some magic trick that others can give each other. Let's please get it right. Ugh.

April 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommentereFUSION

I love Bishop Jakes!! He feeds my spirit and is God's anointed. Keep youur mouth off the man of God!!!

April 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNadine

Interesting.......While I enjoy Bishop Jakes' preaching...Do you think he would consider preaching at a small church? From what I understand it costs at least $10,000 in advance for him to come preach at a church.
A pricetag on the Gospel?

DON'T LEAVE OUT THE NETWORKS, ITS SAD GOD WILL REVEAL THE TRUTH.

April 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAPOSTLE G

FOR THE MOST PART THERE ARE SOME CHRISTIANS ON HERE THAT HAS DONE THEIR HOMEWORK ON THIS MINISTER.. IT DOES COST TEN GRAND TO GET HIM TO YOUR CHURCH I'M JUST SURPRISED IT HASN'T GONE UP SINCE 1996..WHEN I INQUIRED WAS HE AVAILABLE TO COME FOR A DEDICATION SERVICE FOR THE YOUTH GROUP.. PROMISING TO WAIT ON GOD FOR THEIR MATES, BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS THAT WAS JUST TO COME HE ALSO WANTED TO BE PUT UP IN A FIVE STAR HOTEL W/ BENEFITS..... GOD HELP US WITH THIS TYPE OF GOSPEL.. WHICH IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT CHRIST AND THE APOSTLES PREACHED LET IT BE ACCURSED, WHAT I SEE IS A LOT OF CURSED PREACHERS.. AND LAZY SAINTS THAT DON'T WAN TO STUDY AND ASK QUESTION, CONCERNING THE WORD. FREELY THEY'VE RECEIVED FREELY THEY SHOULD GIVE NOT LIVING LIKE KINGS AND QUEENS AMONG THOSE THAT GO TO BED WITH THEIR FAMILIES WANTING JUST THE BASICS TO GET BY. GOD HELP US!!!!!

April 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEVANGELIST P LAZENBY

Wow!!! I can't believe this young individual by the name Lady called off everyone of the prosperity teachers, never have I heard the scriptures twisted so badly, when did the apostles plant money to grow money?? when did it become a seed for an increase. Think God is not angry at all of this ?

THink again, you couldn't be farther from the truth. and you don't see anything wrong with it?? If you are a true child of the MOst High God, my question to you... would be why not?? When God has said not to add to His word, that's all they have done. Prosperity wasn't taught by Jesus or the apostles. 1Tim 6:3-4 LOve of Money: If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to sound instructions of our LOrd Jesus CHrist and to godly teaching, her is conceited and understands nothing.

4 he is conceited (proud) and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions

5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself . 5 and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

April 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEVANGELIST P LAZENBY

@EvangelistL: I am not young, first off. Secondly, I have never heard a sermon where any of them preached on money. I don't get to watch weekly sermons by Joel or T.D. Thirdly, God doesn't require that any of us be POOR! You have the scripture twisted. We cannot serve both God and money it says, which means do not do things solely for money but for God. Now, if what you are saying about his fees is truth, that is sad and ungodly. I can only go by God's leading, not man's. So, as I said before, once He reveals that T.D. and the others are phonies, I'll retreat. One last thing, on a recent teaching by J. Meyer, she preached on not expecting money or anything else from God if your heart isn't right, you aren't walking in obedience, etc. She also always speaks on her small beginnings (the others also) and how it took her at least 25-30 years to become as successful as she has. I think a lot of people have jealous spirits toward others because they lack. That is not good at all. Pray and ask God to enlarge your territory; He will when the time and your heart and life is right. Good day.

Another thing, read the Old Testament to see how the priests stayed well taken care of and fed (God's requirements).
