In August of this year, Houston-based Grammy-nominated recording artist and pastor of “Love & Liberty Fellowship Church International,” Kim Burrell, opened up about how loss had cast a dark shadow over her life.
Since the passing of her best friend and musical icon, Whitney Houston, stepfather Doy Lee Spears, and eldest brother Julius Lynn Burrell, her emotional battle has been intense. Now, the jazz-gospel soloist has been dealt another painful blow—the death of her mother.
Helen G. Spears, the matriarch of the Burrell family, made her transition to heaven after an intense battle with cancer in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Dec. 1. She was 70.
Just 5 months ago, on July 29, Burrell said goodbye to her brother on Facebook. "Prayers are needed. I lost my elder brother Julius Lynn Burrell today. Very sad," the distressed artist wrote.
Sadness is being compounded with the latest departure of the woman who taught Burrell to love the Lord and serve Him with her gifts.
A powerful evangelist and singer in her own right, the late Spears passed those gifts along to her famous daughter whom she doted on by saying, “I love the people who love her, but not only that, I love everyone.”
That love was also balanced with clear, Bible-based instruction, as Spears was known for firmly telling the truth and advocating holiness in all things.
In a 2012 Mother’s Day message, she said, “Our ‘how to’ book is the Bible: it presents life-changing information! There isn’t any person in any place who doesn’t need God in their life, and there isn’t anyone who is beyond being touched by God, no matter who they are, where they are, what they have, or what they have done.”
Mother Spears continued by advising moms to “be reminded that good advice and a bad example is mighty confusing,” admonishing them to live a life consistent with their profession of faith.
Before passing away, a week earlier, Spears celebrated a birthday on Nov. 24 and was reportedly surrounded by family when she succumbed.
Her home-going services are currently set for Saturday, Dec. 7 at Greater Grace Outreach Church in Houston, Texas.
Back in July, Burrell shared a message online that said, "Don't ever take your family & close friends for granted... When all is said & done, they're all you've got!"
