Bishop T.D. Jakes Disses ‘Preachers Of L.A.’—Calls Reality Show ‘Junk’

Article By Rebecca Johnson:: EEW Magazine Entertainment News

The premiere of Oxygen’s controversial docu-series, Preachers Of L.A., may have pulled in a record 1.1 million viewers, but one of the most influential Christian pastors in America, Bishop T.D. Jakes, holds a very low opinion of it.

On Sunday morning, October 13 at the Potter’s House in Dallas, TX, Jakes dissed the reality show, calling it “junk” and distancing himself from the stars’ blinged-out images and flamboyance.

“Now, I know you been watching that junk on TV,” Jakes said, criticizing Preachers Of L.A. amid a plea for congregants and online viewers to sow a financial seed into his local ministry.

“I want to tell you right now, not one dime of what you’re sowing right now will buy my suit. I want you to know my car is paid for. I want you to know I got my house on my own. I want you to know I’m not bling-blinging. I am not shake and bake. I had money when I came to Dallas and I plan to have some when I leave,” Jakes stated emphatically.

“You did not buy what I got,” he continued. “I had it when I came here. You know I had it when I came here. The devil is a lie! I have sold enough books and produced enough movies. I don’t need your offering to pay for this little slimy suit. So I rebuke that spirit in the name of Jesus Christ.”

That spirit Jakes referred to is one of criticism, cynicism and skepticism of mega pastors’ motives following the premiere of Preachers of L.A. that documents the lives of 6 larger-than-life personalities: Bishop Noel Jones, Deitrick Haddon, Bishop Clarence McClendon, Pastor Wayne Chaney, Bishop Ron Gibson, and Pastor Jay Haizlip.

Bishop Clarence McClendon pictured with his wife Priscilla and the couple’s son inside the McClendon’s home, worth more than $7 million-- the most expensive of all the pastors' homes featured on Preachers Of L.A. (Credit: Tim Brown/Oxygen)

The rich Christian pastors are not in any way shy about indulging their cravings for the finer things in life, gladly showing off their fancy cars, sprawling houses and opulent lifestyles that rival rappers and mainstream celebrities.

No doubt, the Preachers of L.A. have built empires for themselves, but Jakes said, “We are going to build the Kingdom of God like we have always built the Kingdom of God."

Then, Jakes delivered the one-liner that sent the crowd into a frenzy. He said, "I’m not from L.A. I’m from Dallas!”

Zinger.

That verbal jab had Potter’s House attendees cheering loudly, slapping each other high-five and expressing approval of their leader’s strong commentary.

Continuing to stick up for his own credibility, he added, “The people who have been here a while can go through my track record and prove when I said something, I did it. When we went after something, we bought it. When we wanted the land, we paid for it. When we wanted the school, we built it. When we went after this church we burned the mortgage on this church.”

He also interjected, “You don’t do that kind of business being shake and bake and slimy and—shut up,” he abruptly interrupted and censored his own speech.

“Woo! Pull the plug,” Jakes talked to himself openly, then shifted gears a bit, focusing on the accomplishments of the ministry, rather than the shortcomings of the ministers on TV.

“So let the work I’ve done speak for me. You are sowing into good ground. And the 300 families that are employed in this ministry eat from this ministry, work in this ministry, and help us to produce the excellence that we do," he explained. "The natives all over Kenya drink water because of this ministry. And the hospital in Nairobi survives because of this ministry.”

The leader was set on making it clear that his ministry was focused on missions, not mansions; MegaCare (his humanitarian organization), not mega cars.

“I do not need you to buy my car. I got this,” he said, pausing for an extended period.

Before moving on, Jakes told the congregation, “If you appreciate my straightforwardness, give God some praise."

Then, moments later, he expressed indignantly, “I’m a grown man, dog.”

If Bishop Jakes thinks "Preachers of LA" is bad, wait until he sees "The Tankards-Thicker Than Water." Fakeness, pretention and narcissism at its best. SMH

Don't like the comments at all...unless jakes and others know that these pastors using the church money to buy things they should not say or make these suggestions. Some of these same pastors sit on the same stage and to dis them when it is conveniently so to make you look like the better one is wrong.

Bishop Jakes is a self absorbed man not even God did any of the work in Dallas. He said I am a man dog I have this thing. He said if I say I am going to do it I will do it in his mind it is all about him, You walk into the church and it is all about him. It won't be long now sir and you will be done. God said He is a jealous God and He will not let no man get His Glory !

people repent and prepare the way for King Jesus is coming to take his church , a Holy Church , repent from the love of money , love of the world if you are friend of the world you cannot be a friend of God , repent from the gospel of prosperity , and return to the cross in Jesus name

I think pastor jakes could have had a private conference with the fellow preachers, rather than go on public setting to express his opinion. One of Jesus Christ message to the world, is thou shall not Judge. He who is without sin cast the first stone. I do not support our brother, humiliating one another in large platforms. No matter what, we should keep our disputes and discourse in private. I find that it is best, to always show public support and build each other up- no matter what. Because the fact of the matter remains true. No one else is doing it.

when we go to serve others without overcoming self,we only end up serving ourselves at the expense of others.

I agree all these shows are tactics of the devil to distract people from CHRIST. But none of us our perfect. But while T.D. Jakes is judging other pastors, he better watch the company he keeps. Hanging out and agreeing with people that claim there is more than one way to heaven (Oprah) is not correct either. He's also in the showbiz. He's producing movies that portray a positive message yet they are not CHRISTian based. Yes his church has a televised show, but he's coming out with a talk show and continuing to produce non-CHRISTian movies.

Sure hope, Bishop T. D. Jakes was taken out of context.

Bishop T. D. Jakes knows full-well that all that he has accomplished the books he sells, the homes and cars he owns are from gifts and donations given to him by his congregation and his ministry partners.

Those donations and gifts help PAY for his home, cars and his suits!!!

No need to knock the "Preachers of LA" soley because of the wealth being showcased on our TV screens, after all, the preachers of LA got "theirs" the same way the preacher of Dallas and-any-mega-preacher-of-USA got his.

I agree with Bishop T.D. Jakes. I thought the show, Pastors of L.A., did not present pastors in a good light. I felt that the pastors views and actions were of the world and cerainly not of Christ. I know that we are all not perfect and we all come from something, our past, but we need to leave those behaviors and actions in the past and strive to reach the calling of the most High King, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Did the pastor actually say that he was taking his "glock" with him to meet with the gang members? Really!!! Very disappointing show that I will not continue to watch.

Very well said Elaine...and TD Jakes is a fine one to talk...just hope that unbelievers don't watch this nonsense...it's so sad what's happening in the body of Christ today but the Bible describes it...lovers of themselves.

October 16, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRose

I believe that the idea of the show was to provide an in-depth look at the "lives" of the pastors to show that they are "human" and just men. However, after viewing the show I got to thinking how the world views us Christians and this show has increased their beliefs. From Jimmy Swaggart the world has thrown all pastors in the same category just as they do when discriminating against blacks/Hispanics. We are all thieves and welfare recipients according to them. However, we should be Kingdom minded and not so judgmental/jealous but the truth of the matter is that is that if you took out the mansions and the cars in the show, would you still be saying the same thing? It's way too easy to be jealous and envious than it is to just be proud.

It seems to me Bishop jakes was tooting his own horn . He gave them fresh drinking water and he started the school and he he he !! And the he ask them praise God if they agreed with "his" accomplishments. Sounds to me like he mays be hating a bit. He has had his share of movies roles and Hollywood swinging . Honor yourself on earth and that's were you will be honored . Let your works reveal themselves without boastfulness . At the end of the day God is still in control from the White House all the way Clarence's mansion. I reserve my opinion of the show right now , I want to see if they will truly get the gospel of Christ out to the world, however non conventional it may be.

October 16, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLebeauf

Less face reality! 99 1/2 % of the world that's in business, regardless of the nature of the business, they begin with help, they were (Dirt PO). Now thrive on the media; refusing to remember how they started with a humble heart . With one outfit, one pair shoes with holes, shotgun house, hoop-tie car, and snotty nose brats. Please don't deny that this is true! Now that God has moved upon the face of the deep and blessed his people to rise, for his love alone everyone should give thanks. Riches has captivated the hearts and minds of the church from the apostles to the bench warner. Everybody want mo money, which is the reason they Demand a Huge Fee for preaching and speaking. Do you think GREED has taken control of the pulpits? Thank you Lord for those that Preach the Truth and Live Holy..Amen

Bishop comments were not effective, because it was like the pot calling the kettle black. Bishop Jakes is in the same industry as these preachers are. He is selling the same thing as these guys. Im socked by these comments. He didn't state them at Church on Sunday, so I guess he stated it on Twitter or some other form. There is not too many preachers on the National seen who are preaching the word of God. Most are preaching to enrich themselves.

And we the natives in Kenya are grateful to Bishop Massa! Oh, and "the hospital in Nairobi" is double grateful for all he has done. smdh

October 17, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnna

"The natives all over Kenya drink water because of this ministry. And the hospital in Nairobi survives because of this ministry.”

Fuck you, Mr Jakes.

I can reliably state for a fact that the statement above is a lie. And slightly racially insulting. And a lie as well. Did I mention that it's a filthy filthy lie?

The truth is that in Kenya the "Natives" don't drink any water. The rest of us keep them as pets to be hunted for sport. It goes without saying that they don't have a hospital either.

We just feed the sick ones to the lions that are constantly frolicking just outside our huts.
