Bishop T.D. Jakes Disses ‘Preachers Of L.A.’—Calls Reality Show ‘Junk’

Article By Rebecca Johnson:: EEW Magazine Entertainment News

The premiere of Oxygen’s controversial docu-series, Preachers Of L.A., may have pulled in a record 1.1 million viewers, but one of the most influential Christian pastors in America, Bishop T.D. Jakes, holds a very low opinion of it.

On Sunday morning, October 13 at the Potter’s House in Dallas, TX, Jakes dissed the reality show, calling it “junk” and distancing himself from the stars’ blinged-out images and flamboyance.

“Now, I know you been watching that junk on TV,” Jakes said, criticizing Preachers Of L.A. amid a plea for congregants and online viewers to sow a financial seed into his local ministry.

“I want to tell you right now, not one dime of what you’re sowing right now will buy my suit. I want you to know my car is paid for. I want you to know I got my house on my own. I want you to know I’m not bling-blinging. I am not shake and bake. I had money when I came to Dallas and I plan to have some when I leave,” Jakes stated emphatically.

“You did not buy what I got,” he continued. “I had it when I came here. You know I had it when I came here. The devil is a lie! I have sold enough books and produced enough movies. I don’t need your offering to pay for this little slimy suit. So I rebuke that spirit in the name of Jesus Christ.”

That spirit Jakes referred to is one of criticism, cynicism and skepticism of mega pastors’ motives following the premiere of Preachers of L.A. that documents the lives of 6 larger-than-life personalities: Bishop Noel Jones, Deitrick Haddon, Bishop Clarence McClendon, Pastor Wayne Chaney, Bishop Ron Gibson, and Pastor Jay Haizlip.

Bishop Clarence McClendon pictured with his wife Priscilla and the couple’s son inside the McClendon’s home, worth more than $7 million-- the most expensive of all the pastors' homes featured on Preachers Of L.A. (Credit: Tim Brown/Oxygen)

The rich Christian pastors are not in any way shy about indulging their cravings for the finer things in life, gladly showing off their fancy cars, sprawling houses and opulent lifestyles that rival rappers and mainstream celebrities.

No doubt, the Preachers of L.A. have built empires for themselves, but Jakes said, “We are going to build the Kingdom of God like we have always built the Kingdom of God."

Then, Jakes delivered the one-liner that sent the crowd into a frenzy. He said, "I’m not from L.A. I’m from Dallas!”

Zinger.

That verbal jab had Potter’s House attendees cheering loudly, slapping each other high-five and expressing approval of their leader’s strong commentary.

Continuing to stick up for his own credibility, he added, “The people who have been here a while can go through my track record and prove when I said something, I did it. When we went after something, we bought it. When we wanted the land, we paid for it. When we wanted the school, we built it. When we went after this church we burned the mortgage on this church.”

He also interjected, “You don’t do that kind of business being shake and bake and slimy and—shut up,” he abruptly interrupted and censored his own speech.

“Woo! Pull the plug,” Jakes talked to himself openly, then shifted gears a bit, focusing on the accomplishments of the ministry, rather than the shortcomings of the ministers on TV.

“So let the work I’ve done speak for me. You are sowing into good ground. And the 300 families that are employed in this ministry eat from this ministry, work in this ministry, and help us to produce the excellence that we do," he explained. "The natives all over Kenya drink water because of this ministry. And the hospital in Nairobi survives because of this ministry.”

The leader was set on making it clear that his ministry was focused on missions, not mansions; MegaCare (his humanitarian organization), not mega cars.

“I do not need you to buy my car. I got this,” he said, pausing for an extended period.

Before moving on, Jakes told the congregation, “If you appreciate my straightforwardness, give God some praise."

Then, moments later, he expressed indignantly, “I’m a grown man, dog.”

I was a The Potter's House to hear this and I was surprised by it because it seemed to have come out of the blue. TD Jakes had finished preaching and was in the middle of raising the offering. Then he just went IN. It was crazy!!! I have never really seem him like that. He was in rare form. I'm not sorry he said it though and I think that is his right to express his opion. Its just not like him thats all.

I did watch portions of the show, and my initial thoughts have not changed. My take is simply...If it glorifies God (The Lord Jesus Christ), then it's of God. If it does not, then it's not of God. Now, YOU must try the spirit by the word and see whether it's of God. Remember, God rules in the affairs of men. Jakes, Jones, Hadden...no one has a heaven or hell to place us. KEEP focused saints, the end is near and more of this sort of distraction will come.

Jesus was not a flashy, extravagant person while on the Earth. In fact, the night Judas betrayed Jesus and the Pharisees came to arrest him, Judas had to kiss Jesus in order for the Pharisees to even know which person Jesus was!

Think about that.

When I read about Peter, Paul, John, and JESUS, I cannot begin to imagine them behaving the way modern day preachers act. Matter of fact whenever Jesus performed a miracle, most times he told people not to tell anyone what he did.

There is nothing wrong with being wealthy and having nice things. The problem comes with HOW you’ve acquired this wealth and if you worship your wealth.

Wow. TD Jakes is outraged huh? Get real Jakes. You're upset because you don't want anyone looking at your possessions sideways. You are so coward sir. You let Oprah "the fornicating" Winfrey punk you on tv. Whwn she asked you about your beliefs concerning homosexuality, you caved and gave some apologetic answer about what the bible teaches. Why weren't you as vehement and boisterous to rebuke and denounce homosexuality as a man of God? I know why, because you were already in business-bed with Jezebel. Your money came from the customers called congregants. People are stupid to fall for the merchandising of the gospel. If God called you to preach and teach, then do that. You didn't need to put it in a book as a supplement to the bible and what you preach or teach at the church house. So if I don't buy the book or dvd, I guess I won't be blessed or edified by that word of wisdom that God blessed you to give to the sheep. REALLY? Jakes nobody wouldn't know who you were if it wasn't for church, so don't give me that I had money before I came here crap. You came to DALLAS because of the large demographic of black people. You chose the city based on numerical projections, not Godly direction. YOU HAVE BEEN AS BUSINESS-MINDED AS THEY COME JAKES. I agree with Mel. Good observation. If it's God, why are so many so outraged at putting it on a public forum? This foolishness need to be exposed. Maybe now, some folks will re-evaluate their PASTOR and ministry. WAKE UP PEOPLE.

I must say that Jakes is legitimately in a different league. He in fact does not receive a paycheck from the Potters House, so all the money that comes in the church goes into ministries and their full-time staff. He makes enough money from ownership of his words (sermons) and all of his other business ventures that he can make the comments that he made. He doesn't need to sell God out the way that these 6 pastors seem to have done for reality TV!

The Church has been compromised and many of our leaders are in serious trouble. Our Pastors need prayer.

I knew Bishop Jakes when he had much of nothing...... He was profound over 20 years ago and the same anointing is still on his life. He did this the bible way and he owes no man nothing except to love them like the bible say! I love his stance and those that taint his name by trying to link put him in a category of "less than honorable" shame on you. I have seen him preach in a church with no air full of people; standing ...preaching and teaching for an hour; sweating so hard that when he lifted the mike to speak you could see the sweat pour from the bend in his arm and NOBODY leaving because the word was so powerful. This man has proven himself faithful in the eyes of God! All you see is the Glory...but you don't know his story. This show is not a display of wisdom AT ALL. The bible says don't let your good be evil spoken of. And they put themselves right in the line of fire. The same things that Bishop Jakes has we can all have if we are willing to do what he was willing to do. God has him here to be an inspiration and not a target for petty thinking, bitter and slightly jealous Christians. As far as the Preachers of LA, pray for them. It is so embarrassing when we (Christians) treat each other like the world treats us!

I love it, Bishop...though not a member of your congregation, I firmly believe that some of the actions presented/displayed by a few of the Angels' of God (as they are...[???]) are somewhat unseemly and reflect a poor and greedy demeanor of Christ...(not saying that we, Christians, should live beneath the wealth of this world, but what I'm expressing is the presentation/actions/display of some of these "Men of God"...[i.e. 'What's the deal with the 'armor' bearers comin' to a chill spot...(did they know a fight was bound to ensue; is he wanted by the mob; are the masses that expected...{another note:}...why so hostile and/or offended..."...in decency and in order..." right?...if you're given 2minutes, take 2minutes...Jesus asked the man at the pool..."Do you want to be made whole?" that was it...a few words to reach the masses...(not just one man whom was targeted-fortunately, the other man/men were not offended by the segregation/disassociation to the appointment/invitation so much so that they did not receive Christ-{"To God be the Glory"}...I thought the vocalist/psalmist was going to throw blows..."4real Peter...chill out...God gives you the power to get wealth; not the words or/nor the presentation of a mans' words..."...
I enjoy the strength in viewing these men of God, who boldly chose to say, "I am Christ's" on the 'tele'...I am grateful and rejoice with them in the material possessions God allows them to enjoy...I just hope that they will be more mindful that the world is watching and there are souls to be saved/lives to be won/deliverance and restoration to be retrieved. Not saying be fake...just be mindful...some of the actions displayed are familiar to that of the lost/or the babes in Christ..."Make it work-Make it different from what is experienced in the lives of so many hopeless MEN/YOUNG MEN/YOUNG MALE TEENS!!!!
p.s. Shout out to my Pastor: Pastor, Dr. Lance D. Watson, Sr.-St. Paul's B.C. Richmond, VA...also, to my 4EVA FRIEND, Pastor, Patrick A. Jennings, Sr.-Detroit, MI...Love Y'all!!!! U 2Bishop, Jakes...(not an afterthought...4sho)...!!!! BEZ

How come he (Jakes) does not complaint about christians watching the Kardashians?

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteral

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good...2 Cor 5:10 As disciples of Chirst we must walk circumspectly, watching as well as praying for one another. The enemy has always attempted to divide The Kingdom Of God, but the gates of hell shall not prevail against it!

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I agree with Mr. Jakes, however Mr. Jakes should be the last to talk when he is consorting with and affiliating himself with Oprah Winfrey who is NOT interested in GOD or the things of GOD! The Bible is clear that friendship with the world is enmity with God. Mr. Jakes needs to look in his own backyard first, and judge himself before he can talk about anyone else!

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPaula Richards

This is disappointing why would he take such a low road? Why not call them , meet with them yo correct what he felt is wrong...Why is he acting like he never received a dime from church? Why did he bash LA when he failed to represent the word when asked about homosexuality? Lastly why did he choose offering time to bash LA Preachers ? Because he was concerned about raising a big offering dam fool

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPruvev

Incredible the same Bishop who would not openly bash his spiritual son Eddie Long for screwing and turning out young boys dam hypocrite all he could say was we need to pray well why not say that now Eddie foul is far past Preachers of LA smh at you idiots supporting Jakes an his bs

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPruvev again

I will state when Bishop T. D. Jakes stop selling $90.00 DVD'S and Blessed Oil then maybe he can speak they all for money and God hears nothing any of them say John 9:31 and I rebuke satan in all money hustlers that use the Word of God for increase Amen.

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMabel O. Allen

Bishop Jakes you are not telling the truth. You may have come to Dallas with millions, but where did the millions come from before you got to Dallas. You sure did not make it in that small mining town in Virginia because nobody knew you. It was when Paul Crouch promoted you and the saints of God patronized you then you became a millionaire. Talking about the pot calling the kettle black. When you say these preachers show is junk, what about when you are running around with Hollywood types, Opera that commits fornication with Steadman who she is not married to. Run around with Tyler Perry who laid his hands on you and falling out in the floor. One minute Tyler is cussing and the next minute he is praising. You might need to try the spirits and know if they are of God are not yourself. Running around with body guards and Jesus said He made no reparation of Himself. You are the one that sounds like you are greedy with what God's people gave you !!!
