Bishop T.D. Jakes Disses ‘Preachers Of L.A.’—Calls Reality Show ‘Junk’

Article By Rebecca Johnson:: EEW Magazine Entertainment News

The premiere of Oxygen’s controversial docu-series, Preachers Of L.A., may have pulled in a record 1.1 million viewers, but one of the most influential Christian pastors in America, Bishop T.D. Jakes, holds a very low opinion of it.

On Sunday morning, October 13 at the Potter’s House in Dallas, TX, Jakes dissed the reality show, calling it “junk” and distancing himself from the stars’ blinged-out images and flamboyance.

“Now, I know you been watching that junk on TV,” Jakes said, criticizing Preachers Of L.A. amid a plea for congregants and online viewers to sow a financial seed into his local ministry.

“I want to tell you right now, not one dime of what you’re sowing right now will buy my suit. I want you to know my car is paid for. I want you to know I got my house on my own. I want you to know I’m not bling-blinging. I am not shake and bake. I had money when I came to Dallas and I plan to have some when I leave,” Jakes stated emphatically.

“You did not buy what I got,” he continued. “I had it when I came here. You know I had it when I came here. The devil is a lie! I have sold enough books and produced enough movies. I don’t need your offering to pay for this little slimy suit. So I rebuke that spirit in the name of Jesus Christ.”

That spirit Jakes referred to is one of criticism, cynicism and skepticism of mega pastors’ motives following the premiere of Preachers of L.A. that documents the lives of 6 larger-than-life personalities: Bishop Noel Jones, Deitrick Haddon, Bishop Clarence McClendon, Pastor Wayne Chaney, Bishop Ron Gibson, and Pastor Jay Haizlip.

Bishop Clarence McClendon pictured with his wife Priscilla and the couple’s son inside the McClendon’s home, worth more than $7 million-- the most expensive of all the pastors' homes featured on Preachers Of L.A. (Credit: Tim Brown/Oxygen)

The rich Christian pastors are not in any way shy about indulging their cravings for the finer things in life, gladly showing off their fancy cars, sprawling houses and opulent lifestyles that rival rappers and mainstream celebrities.

No doubt, the Preachers of L.A. have built empires for themselves, but Jakes said, “We are going to build the Kingdom of God like we have always built the Kingdom of God."

Then, Jakes delivered the one-liner that sent the crowd into a frenzy. He said, "I’m not from L.A. I’m from Dallas!”

That verbal jab had Potter’s House attendees cheering loudly, slapping each other high-five and expressing approval of their leader’s strong commentary.

Continuing to stick up for his own credibility, he added, “The people who have been here a while can go through my track record and prove when I said something, I did it. When we went after something, we bought it. When we wanted the land, we paid for it. When we wanted the school, we built it. When we went after this church we burned the mortgage on this church.”

He also interjected, “You don’t do that kind of business being shake and bake and slimy and—shut up,” he abruptly interrupted and censored his own speech.

“Woo! Pull the plug,” Jakes talked to himself openly, then shifted gears a bit, focusing on the accomplishments of the ministry, rather than the shortcomings of the ministers on TV.

“So let the work I’ve done speak for me. You are sowing into good ground. And the 300 families that are employed in this ministry eat from this ministry, work in this ministry, and help us to produce the excellence that we do," he explained. "The natives all over Kenya drink water because of this ministry. And the hospital in Nairobi survives because of this ministry.”

The leader was set on making it clear that his ministry was focused on missions, not mansions; MegaCare (his humanitarian organization), not mega cars.

“I do not need you to buy my car. I got this,” he said, pausing for an extended period.

Before moving on, Jakes told the congregation, “If you appreciate my straightforwardness, give God some praise."

Then, moments later, he expressed indignantly, “I’m a grown man, dog.”

(Matthew 7:21) Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Beloved we will all be held accountable. Watch and pray.

I only saw the preview of this show. To Bishop TD Jakes, thanks for saying what's so true in the body of Christ. This show makes all of us that are working soooo hard to live the life of Christ seem as though we are serving for the wrong reasons. Thank God I'm serving to please Jesus! What will happen if God allowed all of their riches be taken away for a season? Who would be genuine then? God is still looking for true men and women of God. God is going to uncover more than just these guys.

No harm intended-but T.D Jakes can't talk. Has anyone seen his compromising talk show on BET! He had 4 men on this past sunday talking about sex. Not one time did he tell them that sex outside of marriage is not approved by God. He joked with the best of them.

The nerve of TD Jakes! Pot calling kettle black, Tyler made a shame out of your anointing when he laid his filthy hands on you and you fell!

The show should serve as a wake-up call to many folks who continuously give to a useless cause. Take care of yourself and family FIRST because that's what these LA Preachers are definitely doing.

The bible declares that the Elders that rule well, are worthy of double honor! As long as everything is kept in it's proper perspective it's all good. I don' t believe in charging for the gospel but there is nothing wrong with asking. It's take answers all things and the servant is worthy!

T.D. Jakes said it best and i agree with him. that show is not going to make it if the christians that are fo the kingdom have to support it

This article is totally bogus!!!! I attend the Potters House and was present at that service. If you heard the sermon that was taught that day, you wouldn't make crazy assumptions!!!! Know the whole truth first!!!!

Is That The Same T. D. Jakes Who Refused To Bless The People Of God At The Los Angeles Coliseum Because Ticket Sales Were Low, so The Promoters Could Not Pay His Full Honorarium? He Got On A Got Cart And Left The Stadium. Is This The Same Jakes Who Sold TickEts For His Event At UCLA, And Then Still Raised An Offering To Help Meet His Expenses? Jakes, You Too Are Cut From The Same Cloth And Should Not Throw Stones From Your Glass House.

Heart Body and Soul on BET.....Bishop you have got to lose weight if you are going to teach people about physical, spiritual and emotional health. I can't listen to someone who is overweight and wrote a book about how your father's health was bad and that's the reason he died at a young age. If you don't be careful and get you tummy down, you are going to regret it. Please lose some weight and teach others.

And here is satan's plan revealed; and we as Christians have played right into it. We have allowed the world to put us on display fighting amongst one another and exposing weaknesses and failures to the world that God was dealing with us on behind closed doors. If God didn't expose you, why would you do it to yourself??? There is an old saying that says, "What happens in this house stays in this house" WAY TO GO CHURCH!

TD can talk all he wants, but we remember what his countrified ass REALLY looked like when his ministry first started. TBN got all of em on tape. LOL!

I hate that this article 'sectioned' off this part of Bishop's sermon to make a spectacle... I guess they had to, or else, there would be absolutely nothing to talk about... Because the rest of that sermon on that sunday.... POWERFUL. ON TIME. And in REAL TIME...

All of these opinions about this show, the bible, and now this overwhelming need to justify why we do what we do [gettin' money] speaks volumes about how "off" we still are. Even in our professions to know God, we are scatter-brained.

This is reality TV. The cast is paid, the network is getting paid off of the ratings and the surrounding controversy. The way "we" go about trying to justify why we do what we do, and slap an "in Jesus' name" at the end of it really displays how ridiculous and deterrent we can be at times. I mean come on, can we be honest in church about church, just for a second...?

I am very familiar with most of these pastors on the cast. And God uses each and every one of them. Truthfully, they have impacted creation greatly and positively. My only true critique, really from my spirit, though, is that somewhere along the line, something seems so FAKE about many Pastor's and church. Saving face seems to be the popular way to sanctification.

GOD WANTS HONESTY. GOD WANTS TRANSPARENCY. NOT AN OPINION, NOT A POLITICAL VIEW, NOT A LIST OF OPPRESSIVE COMMANDS THAT TRUTHFULLY THE LEADER CAN'T HONOR OR LIVE UP TO... BUT HONESTY. WHO said you had to hide, and duck? God is not an opinion. God is a spirit. And those who worship Him are in complete vulnerability; for they Know Him for His revelation.

I'm so glad I go to a church where the pastor is REAL about LIFE.

What happened to people like Billy Graham representing the virtue of integrity instead of these Preachers?!

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

People need to really know what goes on in the kingdom of God. There are so many excesses by those in the churches. If you really want an in depth insight of what i am talking about read "The Excesses of the Church-A Wake Up Call" by Walter Senah.
