Are Animals Our Equals? Gospel Artist DeWayne Woods Teams Up with PETA & Calls Dogs ‘Kids’

By L.T. Jiles, EEW Magazine News Editor

DeWayne Woods for PETASome believe animals are inferior because Genesis 1:26 says humans have dominion “over all the earth.” Others, like gospel artist DeWayne Woods, view animals as equals and companions. He has teamed up with “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” (PETA) to advocate for their kind treatment.

With more than 3 million members and supporters, PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world. Now they are expanding their reach to the gospel community with the help of Dewayne Woods.

In a new PETA ad, Woods appears with his two dogs, which he, like media mogul Oprah Winfrey, calls his “kids.”

The scripture used in the promotional advertisement is Proverbs 12:10, from The Message Bible, which says, “Good people are good to their animals; the “good-hearted” bad people kick and abuse them.

According to, “DeWayne sheds light on the cruelty of forcing dogs to live at the end of a chain and exposes cruelty to animals in circuses.”

In a video-recorded interview, Woods explains his love for animals. “I’ve always grown up with animals and I’ve always just felt like, that, animals were family to me,” he says. “And so, I am a complete lover of animals, and anything I can do to support them, that’s really my goal and job.”

During his conversation with PETA, the animal-lover explains why he condemns the familiar practices of chaining dogs outside, hosting dog fights, and using animals in the circus. “That’s just not showing love,” he says.

Dominion is not beating them, Woods shares, but it is “showing them the way, showing them that you love them, that you’re concerned about them, [and] you want to watch them grow up to be the best animals that they could possibly be.”

Further, Woods advocates spaying and neutering of dogs to avoid overpopulation.

Spaying is removing the ovaries and uterus of a female pet and neutering is removing the testicles of your male dog or cat.

Yoooo... I'm sorry but this is really bizarre! I don't get all that dog kissing and stuff like that. I don't think we should be mean to dogs but they are not our kids.

I feel like there are other causes that could really use his voice. PETA? smh

January 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEvette

At least he didn't show up butt naked in one of those weird attention-seeking PETA ads that sya "I'd rather go naked than wear fur." LOL

His dogs are so cute! But kids?? That's a little far.

Why am I laughing uncontrollably at this? Is this a joke? There are hungry, homeless children right here in America and Christians are focusing on letting DOGS know they love them and want them to grow up to be the BEST dogs they can be? LOLOLOLOLOL!! This is hilariously stupid!

I'm a dog person, definitely, but I don't agree that they are "kids" and there's nothing wrong with keeping a dog outside. Every dog is not an indoor dog.

Kindness to animals is a noble cause. God bless Dewayne.

Isn't this the ex-gay guy who had AIDS or something and got healed? He's an interesting character to me.

January 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFaye

If anybody can find me a scripture in the Bible that says we are equal to animals, I would really appreciate it.... I'll wait...

January 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoline Adams

Haven't you all heard of evolution? I mean, WE evolved from monkeys so... of course we're like animals.

January 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTay

Some people thanks to Peta, think wearing fur is cruel and eating meat is terrible. They are trying to convert people to become vegan and all this other nonsense. I'm not down with Peta at all.

Black people know we can mistreat some dogs! We get them and don't feed them right and leave them outside. So even if you don't agree that they are your "kids" at least maybe he can help some black folks stop dogging their dogs! Good for him.

January 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTeenie

Here's my problem with this whole thing. There is no biblical support for the idea that dogs and other animals are somehow equal to people. I don't think animal abuse is right. I'm not saying that. But Peta goes much deeper than "kind treatment." They act like animals are little people and they are not. I have no guilt when I have a nice steak and wear a fur coat. Sorry.

I think loving your animals to the point of seeing them as a part of your family is beautiful. Some people see it as overboard and that's fine. If animals are not your thing, then don't get any as pets. For those of you who do have dogs, cats, or any other animals at home, take care of them. I think that is a good healthy message and one that IS biblically supported. Not that animals are our "equals" per se but loving them is fine. There is nothing at all wrong with that or with Mr. Woods lending his voice to a good cause. Some of y'all find fault with everything and make a mockery of serious things. So immature!
