Sparkle Opens at #5, Grosses $12 Million

EEW Magazine Entertainment Editors

Sparkle made a soft landing at a crowded weekend box office, grossing $12 million and coming in at #5. Though critics’ reviews have been mixed, viewers gave it a glowing “Grade A” CinemaScore, indicating that they absolutely loved it.

While taking in Whitney Houston’s last performance, there was a mixture of tears and cheers among plenty emotional moviegoers.

But, truth be told, it didn’t seem much like a performance at all.

Rather, it appeared that the legendary singer had shown up one last time with a grand sermon for us all. The perfect scripture to encapsulate that message is Mark 8:36: "For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

As Houston’s character warned her daughter, Sparkle, to avoid the deceptive allure of fame, money, and the promise of having it all, viewers could feel the intensity and seriousness of it all.

Before leaving this earth, Whitney Houston seemed to be crying out, “Don’t make the mistakes I did.”

And we all heard her loud and clear.

Did you go see the movie Sparkle this weekend? What did you think of Whitney Houston’s final performance?
