Warryn Campbell, Husband of Mary Mary’s Erica Campbell talks Marriage, Music & Family

By Danielle Harris

Warryn Campbell, my Block Records CEO, producer of Mary Mary’s award-winning hit records, and husband of Erica Campbell is opening up about what it’s like balancing marriage and business with his wife of 11 years. Plus, he shares why he doesn’t want the Campbell children pursuing music as a career.

In a video interview with black women’s website, Madame Noire, Warryn Campbell talks about meeting the woman of his dreams, their unique musical chemistry, and his future hopes for their children Krista, Warryn Jr., and Zaya.

On seeing Erica sing at a play and knowing she was his wife:

“I see her. Erica comes out on stage and sings and all that. And I’m like oh my freaking God, this is crazy. The second time I came back, it was with my family. Right before the time she came out, I looked at my cousin [and] I’m like, ‘Watch this girl that’s about to come out… that’s about to be my wife. This my wife right here.’ I was joking, but, I mean, you know, I guess I wasn’t…”

On what it’s like working together:

“For me, the best part of working with my wife is there becomes a certain familiarity with how I work and what I like, and what I like to hear. I don’t know if I prefer working with my wife and my sister, but I will say there is a certain chemistry we do have that I don’t have with anybody else…Chemistry between me and Mary Mary is special. It’s on another level.

On why he doesn’t want his children to be in the music business:

“I really didn’t want my children to be in the music business, because it’s hard. I went on the road with Boyz II Men, BabyFace, and Brandy straight out of high school…but I got very lucky and blessed to be working. But it’s just not like that for everybody. For my kids, I’m like, go to school. Be doctors, lawyers, you know, because doing it this way is not easy.
