BREAKING: Gospel Artist James Fortune being Sued for Child Abuse, Permanently Disfiguring 4-Year-Old

By EEW News Editors

Stellar Award-winning gospel artist, James Fortune and wife Cheryl are being sued for $5 million dollars for Mr. Fortune’s abuse of his 4-year-old stepson. Documents say after the young boy misbehaved in school, the gospel singer made him take a scalding bath, resulting in severe burns and permanent disfigurement.

The My Fox Houston report is posted in its entirety below:

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - A popular gospel singer is accused of doing horrible things to his 4-year-old stepson.  Now he's being taken to court.

According to a civil lawsuit, gospel music singer James Fortune burned his stepson leaving the boy disfigured with severe burns over nearly 50% of the child's body.  Fortune, who is from and still lives in the Houston area, is named in the lawsuit with his wife Cheryl Fortune.

According to the suit filed against the couple, James picked up Cheryl's 4-year old son from pre-school and the teacher said the boy "misbehaved by coloring on a table".  The documents claim the gospel singer "scolded the toddler" on the way home, put him in time out at home, "continued to yell and berate the child" then started "preparing a scalding bath" for the 4-year old boy.

The lawsuit goes on to say "James instructed (the child) to remove his clothes and began to whip the naked toddler with a switch".  Then the suit accuses James Fortune of "pushing the toddler in the scalding water and holding him down causing second and third degree burns to 47% of his body".  The little boy was flown by "life flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital. The doctors determined the injuries were too extensive and the boy was flown by life flight to Shriners Burn Hospital in Galveston where he remained for 63 days" according to the lawsuit.

The boy has had "numerous skin graft operations to both hands, legs, buttocks and genitals and is permanently disfigured".  Child Protective Services was called and charges were filed.  That all happened in 2001.  In 2003 James Fortune pled guilty to felony Injury To a Child and received 6-years deferred adjudication.

That 4-year old boy is now 15-years old and his biological father is suing the Fortunes for five million dollars. The family says that money would be used to pay for plastic surgery to correct the boy's disfigurement from the burns.  I tried to reach James and Cheryl Fortune but I haven't yet heard back from them.  James Fortune is also the former choir director at Houston's Higher Dimension Church.

James Fortune has issued a statment regarding the incident:

I recently became aware of a civil suit pending against my wife, Cheryl Fortune and I, for an incident that occurred in 2001 involving my stepson. There was a criminal investigation and all matters were resolved in 2003. Since that time, my family and I, including my stepson, have continued with family traditions and always have a loving family environment. We are shocked by this lawsuit but understand people are free to use the court system to pursue claims, whether they contain merit or baseless matters. We are confident through this process, if it proceeds to a judge or jury, the ultimate decision maker will render a decision that is favorable to the circumstances and timing surrounding this situation. We believe in our American justice system and know it will work for us as it has for millions of other Americans.

I love all my children, including my stepson, and I ask for your prayers as we deal with this matter privately. Thank you for your continued support for me, my family, and ministry.

First Creflo Dollar, now this. Wow. I'm speechless.

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSherri

Is this forreal? Please tell me this did NOT happen. James Fortune is one of my favorite gospel artists. I mean where do you have to go in your mind to do something that crazy TO A FOUR YEAR OLD?

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterButterfly Mommy

Abuse happens behind closed doors in millions of homes across America, even Christian homes. Cases like these simply bring it to the light. This is terrible and I hope the father gets every penny of that five million. Disgusting!

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterToby

WHAT?!!!!!!! is that why i never liked his music, (discernment) ! I hope this isnt true. Praying.

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterso beautiful

This turns my stomach. I was abused as a kid so I know what it feels like to have parents do terrible things in the name of "discipline". But NEVER this extreme. What is the world coming to? I just don't know what to say.

I'm not understanding why he isn't going to jail, or didn't go to jail at the time? What transpired that nothing happened?

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

Deferred adjudication lets the person stay out of jail if they successfully complete probation so they won't be considered a criminal under Texas law.

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCorey

How sad for this child. I'm questioning why the father is suing now (since this happened in 2001). I have listened to his stories of being broke and being homeless. Maybe the father wanted to wait until there was enough money to pay for surgery (ies). I just pray that money and embarrassment was not the motivating factor for this...especially not at the expense of this innocent child.

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTL

This revelation is sickening. I think James Fortune may need mental help or something. I can't imagine doing something so wicked, evil and heartless to an innocent child. God help us!

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

What happened that the wife stood by and didn't press charges AND is still with him? Oh no way!

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFlo

SOMEBODY needs to be making a statement! What in the devil?!?

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJackie

for real though this is wrong but it happens EVERYDAY, people are not SAINTS when they come to Christ, but honestly he should have been a MAN and not wait until someone brought him to the FOREFRONT and sued his behind, he knew what he did, if he didnt he needs to get with jesus so more. He should VOLUNTEER that money for damages if he he IN DEED committed this act how could he not know it wouldnt come back. God has MUCH grace for sinners but those who keep their flaws and faults hidden have it coming. That fact that he didnt say anything or VOLUNTEER damages suggests either he didnt do what he's being accused of or he dont BUMPED his head.

only way i can see it. What makes you think it wont come up!

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterso beautiful

Whether true or false, all parties involved need a lot of prayer.

James has just made a statement. Here's the link: http://www.1800gospel.com/2012/06/news-video-james-fortune-wife-sued-alleged-child-abuse/

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteranon

that;s HER child, im confused, something dont sound right, WHY wouldnt she have a PROBLEM with that, unless they dont consider it ABUSE.

Also why dude wait til now. Did they forget, WHY didnt JAMES FORTUNE offer damages to the family if it was so horrible, there should be documented burns so why wouldnt his wife say something unless this story is fabicrated, i think he's wrong but there may be more to it.

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterso beautiful

Something is missing here for me and just doesn't add up. What the heck is going on that a mother would stand by and let something crazy like this occur? Why is it just being talked about now that someone is dragging their behinds into court?

June 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie

I just started crying reading this. This is horrible and devastating.
