Comedian Cedric the Entertainer and reality TV star Niecy Nash may not be anything close to a pastor and first lady in real life, but they’re about to play the roles in the new TV Land series, The Soul Man. Buckle up your seatbelt, because the feisty couple is poised to take viewers on an interesting ride with plenty twists and turns.
According to Cedric, the show will keep it real about life, love, and of course, church folks.
The sitcom will focus on issues couples face within the confines of marriage, while also exploring religion and what Christians, facing human experiences, look like, really.
According to Cedric the entertainer, who plays an R&B superstar-turned-minister, Reverend Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine, the religious world imposes unrealistic expectations upon people. With the show, he hopes to break down “this expectation that the world of religion means that you’ve gotta become so docile and, so ‘holier than thou’ that you can’t be a real person,” he says.
One highlighted scene in a promotional trailer shows Niecy Nash, who plays the first lady, Lolli, donning a cleavage-baring, form-fitting blue dress. And when her preacher husband makes a comment about how she will be perceived by the other women in the church, the outspoken, non-conformist wife replies, “There’s no pleasing those women!”
The idea is to demonstrate that the on-screen first lady is resistant to the notion that she must change to fit into a religious box. “I don’t feel like I should have to change,” says Cedric the Entertainer of his TV wife’s mentality.
The comedy series also stars John Beasley (“Everwood”) as Boyce’s father, Barton, and Wesley Jonathan (“What I Like About You”) as his brother, Stamps.

"The Soul Man" premieres Wednesday June 20 10/9c on TV Land.
